GOsmart Pace and Distance Tracker Pedometers

Product Description

The Omron GOsmart Pace and Distance tracker is the first Omron device to help runners accurately track their pace and distance during a run. The unit features 3D Smart Sensor technology that makes tracking, pace, distance and calories burned accurate and reliable to help runners achieve their goals and go further. A large display makes it easier for the runner to use while exercising.

Product Features

  • Workout Mode - use when running to track pace, distance, exercise time and calories burned; a workout indicator bar will appear by pressing the start button for two seconds
  • Tracks step count and calories and fat grams burned throughout the day
  • Auto Stride - stride length is determined by entering height
  • During Workout Mode, wear at waist for highest accuracy; for all other tracking, can also be placed in any pocket or bag in any direction or worn round the neck with a lanyard (not included)
  • 7-day memory - stores seven days of memory on the display

Customer Reviews

This is definitely the worst distance tracking device I have ever tried. I've used Garmin, Polar, and Nike footpods and the Omron is completely inferior to all of them.
I took this out for a run and used it in parallel with my Garmin FR60. After a 6 mile run, it was 40% short. One problem right out of the box is the calibration is done by entering your height and then automatically assigning a stride distance. That isn't very accurate. But even after adjusting the settings to match my stride, I still found it to be at least 20% off each time. I was able to calibrate all my other running devices to within 5% accuracy (I run at a track often so I know my distance is accurate). The Omron just completely fails at its primary function. And since the distance is wrong, that means calculations like pace and calories burned are also wrong.
Another huge problem is that the directions say you need to secure it somewhere around your midsection (like clipping it to your shorts) to get the most accurate reading. How am I supposed to view the display while running if it is clipped to my shorts? If I can't see the display while using it, the information is useless. To top it off the control scheme is convoluted and confusing.
The bottom line is a distance tracker that doesn't accurately measure distance is worthless. The only reason I didn't give this 1 star is because I'm guessing if I kept experimenting I could eventually pick a random stride length that actually gives reasonably accurate results. But I shouldn't have to guess an inaccurate stride length or make 10 trial-and-error attempts to make this work accurately. I would definitely avoid this product.

When it comes to this device's basic functionality of counting steps and estimating distance, the HJA-301 is reasonably useful, as long as you take the time to calibrate it for your stride and walk or run at fairly consistent pace. However, it's easy to envision scenarios where your stride would vary enough to throw off the calculations, such as alternately walking and running, running uphill or downhill, etc. To be fair, I imagine most trackers suffer from similar shortcomings.
The HJA-301's additional functionality of counting calories, however, is completely useless. The reasons for this are that there are important factors that the device doesn't or simply can't take into account:
- It doesn't know whether you are running uphill or downhill.
- It can't take into account the fitness of the individual. Someone who is well-conditioned will burn fewer calories than someone of the exact same height, weight, and stride who is out of shape.
There are additional factors, but to put this into perspective, I did a hike with someone using a much more advanced calorie counter, and the HJA-301 reported that I burnt 1/4 the calories his device reported.
If all you want is something to count your steps and distance, I'd recommend picking up something cheaper or if you have a smart phone, spend a few bucks on an app. If you want something more advanced, look elsewhere.
